Afterthoughts
Days to install, minutes to remove:
I finished my windows at the Grateful Head by start time on Saturday, but the clubhouse in the park took another half day to finish. I am glad that I managed to sweat it out despite the lack of sleep and intense uv's because the end result was pretty cool. Because the building was on city property, and I did not have a permit, the work had to come down at the end of the weekend (though I was able to leave it up for an extra day). I was pleased with my tea and sympathy subversion in creating a removable graffiti.
Too bad, though, that it had to come down. Almost...
Sunday was rain soaked! Needless to say, I did not maintain my perch in the rain and set out to visit most of the artist garages. I am sorry that I did not have a chance to talk with more people about the work. I am glad that I had the opportunity to be part of such a unique festival.

Takin' it to the Streets
Saturday, August 11 & Sunday, August 12, 2007 from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm
An orphanage for abandoned monsters, 1001 images of Baghdad, a collaborative toy theatre parade, an unexpected poetry respite... AlleyJaunt is Toronto's alternative urban community arts event. On Saturday August 11th and Sunday August 12th, donated back alley garages surrounding Trinity Bellwoods Park are transformed into provocative venues for contemporary art.
Now in its fifth year, AlleyJaunt features over 40 local artists and arts collectives and invites the public to explore their work through the city's less travelled passage-ways in a free, non-traditional community environment. The event gives exposure to local artists, encourages public interaction with art, and reaches out to a diverse community of all ages.
This year, we are offering more than the yearly juried jaunt-we are flaunting AlleyJaunt's fifth year with AlleyJaunt: Five Special Projects. These projects, specially organized by invited local artists/curators, and add another level of experimentation and interaction to the exhibition. Become lost in composer Scott Thomson's wandering musical improvisation performance (with musicians from AIMToronto; performances at 2pm Sat. and Sun.); engage League of Tangents' (LOT-Angela Joosse, Aleksandra Kaminska, Shana MacDonald) elaborate video sculptures; stumble upon parked cars transformed into temporary screening venues in Park-In (curated by Stephen Broomer); let the children be the aesthetic judges in The Children's Choice Awards, a collaboration between Mammalian Diving Reflex and students from Parkdale Public School (Ceremony at 6:30pm Saturday). For the final special project, AlleyJaunt is producing its first ever catalogue-a catalogue that encourages everyone to write, draw and respond to the exhibition.
This year's artists include: Florencia Berinstein, Simla Civelek, Claire Despaire & Zanette Singh, Kimberly England, Michelle Johnson, H.A.P.T.I.C (Peggy-Ann Richards & Lucy Howe), Susan Rowe Harrison, Three Rocks Collective (Ken Fraser, Jessica Chan, Kim Hume), Petrina Ng & Shannon Phair, The Wireless Art in Toronto Squad, Nadia Kurd and Riaz Mehmood, Megarrah Woodland, Marco Buonocore, Elida Schogt, Brian & Madelaine Lyons, Steven Lyons, Tanya Read, Shannon Gerard, Prairie Jaunt (curated by Amber Anderson and Jenny Western), The Left Hand Players (Joelle Craven & Gareth Scales).
Come join the fun of experiencing local contemporary art at this unique community event!

color correction
I just posted my drawings but the colors are really different to what I posted. I am going to have to figure this one one. I used a CMYK file...So much to learn!

I am working on some new designs for the Making Stuff: Kids book. I am having such fun with everything but it is taking time to manage. Will post the images when I get the photos back. Meanwhile, I am working on a drawing. Not sure which version but will post a chain of them. Thoughts?

Here are some images that I really like from Patrick's Flikr set...The top one really works well with the trees outside which is especially nice because one of the things that I really liked about working on the windows was the collaboration with the building and with the elements of the neighborhood that are visible through the windows.

Afterthoughts
So I left the previous post as images because I felt there was a silence about them that I did not want to disturb with text.
Thoughts about the project? Definitely want to make more and explore surfaces. More mapping more thickless. Maybe some text too. People really liked the work. I was really happy making it because it sort of brought together painting, drawing, and woodcuts for me. Enjoy the collaboration with the architecture too...each location has its quirks and strengths and I like the process of negotiating that with a work. Someone asked me what stopped me from continuing to do all the windows in the room?! Time! It would have been really cool but would need several weeks just to install a work of that scale--though what a blast (a kind of headachy blast!) If anyone knows of a space...

Backtracking: thickless
The show was fantastic. It was fun to do a large-scale work and meet other Toronto artists. The installation took about 5 days from start to finish. I thought that it would go faster. I spent most of my days a top a 15 foot ladder-no small feat for someone with a fear of heights-the ipod helped. Don't look down!Most of the drawings were cut in the studio but some were cut at 224 on the glass or on a mat. Cat O'Neil photographed the show and I asked her to do some close ups of flatless. So, here goes...images from the last day of cutting
